JOB DESCRIPTION

American International College is a private, coeducational institution of higher education located on a 52 acre campus in Springfield, Massachusetts. Founded in 1885, the College has 3,500 graduate and undergraduate students. The College offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs through the School of Arts, Education and Sciences, Business Administration, Health Sciences and Continuing Education. In addition at the graduate level, AIC offers doctoral programs in Education and Physical Therapy. The Nurse Practitioner will provide health care services to American International Students within the limits of Massachusetts standards of practice for licensed nurse practitioners. The nurse will work collaboratively with all other health center staff, provide customer service to the students, and practice confidentiality. This position will report to the Director of Dexter Counseling Center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Preventative Care

* Conduct physical exams and medical histories.
* Screen new athletes to ensure their safe participation on an athletic team following NCAA guidelines.
* Update physical exams and health histories to clear athletes to participate in sports and clear health science students to go out in the community for their respective practicum assignments.
* Conduct Health maintenance measures including a review of systems, height, weight, blood pressure check, review of diet and exercise habits, review of social habits and risk assessment.
* Provide immunizations and test titers for students not in compliance with standard immunization requirements.
* Assess real or potential health hazards relating to current health status, including analysis of risky behaviors that cause impact on health status.
* Educate and encourage students to recognize and change behavior that has a negative impact on their health.
* Assist individuals to assume responsibility for the prevention of illness and promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health.
* Assist with family planning and prenatal care, including testing for students needing contraceptive management and counseling on sexually transmitted infections.
* Conduct routine Gynecological exams for students requesting them.

Direct Clinical/ Medical Evaluation and Treatment

* Diagnose and treat injuries, acute illnesses, and infections.
* Diagnose and treat chronic illnesses as well as manage these conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and the like.
* Prescribe medication refills for students on chronic medications.
* Inject medications for students on an injectable contraceptive or an allergy injection protocol through an allergist.
* Provide education about diagnosis, treatment of medical conditions, and appropriate preventative health measures specific to that medical condition.
* Offer continuity of care as needed based on original and/or ongoing assessment of student's health status.
* Provide support to parents concerned with their child's illness, while maintaining confidentiality.
* Maintain a confidential environment for the students at all times.

Testing Judgments

* Order, administer and interpret results of diagnostic studies, including blood tests, urine tests, X-rays and ultrasounds.

Referrals

* Refer for physical therapy and occupational therapy
* Refer for issues requiring a specialist's evaluation and treatment plan outside of the scope of practice of a nurse practitioner.
* Consult, refer and collaborate with other disciplines involved in the delivery of total student care both within AIC community and the greater community.

Reporting

* Report all reportable S.T.I.s to the state public health department.
* Document in charts using clear concise language, noting the reason for a student visit, the objective findings, the assessment of the problem, and the plan for treatment with follow up care as needed.

Secondary Responsibilities/ Community Outreach

* Act as a resource to the campus community with regard to health issues.
* Monitors public health risks in the community and within the AIC campus.
* Plans for campus wide emergency management in collaboration with the nurse and AIC staff.
* Assists the nurse in the operations of the health center, including monitoring refrigeration temperature for immunizations, monitoring the AED readiness, ordering any medical supplies and paperwork essential for the operation of the health center and lab, and ordering medications for the students for minor illnesses and injuries.
* Convey open-mindedness and respect regarding issues and concerns of students.
* Provide a caring and compassionate and empathetic environment for students at all times.
* Advocate for students whenever needed and when possible.
* Be sensitive and aware of cultural differences among students.
* Create supportive, caring environment where students feel welcome in seeking health care advice and assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Licensed to practice as a registered nurse by the Massachusetts Board of Nursing.
* Certified to practice as a nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
* Hold a state and Federal DEA number.
* Certified in CPR and AED training.
* Maintain professional certification through continuing education.
* Maintain BLS certification - CPR and AED.
* Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and experience with the internet.

WORK HOURS/SCHEDULE:

This position is a part-time, ten (10) month, exempt position with no benefits.
